The moving parts of machinery
can be classified as rolling, linear, or a combination of both.
With the development of rolling bearings about 110 years ago,
rolling contact of rolling motion was achieved. This brought
about a great technological revolution. Rolling contact not
only saved motive energy, but also kept frictional resistance
to the minimum and thus greatly improved the performance of
machinery. However, even though the merits of rolling contact
of linear motion are more than ten times those of rolling motion,
rolling contact of linear motion was a long time in coming.
In 1972, applying its unique technological skills, THK developed
a method of linear motion with rolling contact. Thus it became
the world's first company to develop and commercialize the Linear
Motion (LM) Guide. Our linear motion system, by leading to rapid
and epoch-making improvements in the accuracy and speed of advanced
mechatronic instruments such as machine tools, industrial robots,
and semiconductor- manufacturing devices, has made possible
ultra-precise operations, to submicron standards. Recently,
the system has been applied in liquid crystal manufacturing
lines, pendulum-type railway carriages, automobiles, medical
equipment, amusement instruments, and earthquake- proofing devices
for structures such as skyscrapers. Its use has expanded beyond
boundaries.

Our company is currently working
under a program and outlook called "Global-10 21." Its purpose
is to spur us to grow into a top-ten global machine element
manufacturer by the 21st century. Though this target may seem
overambitious, we believe we can reach it, given the potential
of the Japanese market and the virtually infinite capacity of
the world market. THK has taken steps to ensure the success
of this enterprise. In the expectation that we will make our
full-scale debut in the world market very soon, we have expanded
overseas distribution bases, increased our nvestments in equipment
for domestic plants, and raised our production capacity. We
are now pouring effort into promoting technical and business
partnerships with university and corporate laboratories to strengthen
programs for developing new technology and products.

Since its inception, THK has
anticipated the blossoming of electromechanical engineering.
