Safeguarding human life and property is a purpose to which
technology can make numerous contributions. One of THK's important
tasks is to create technologies which, for examples, effectively
take the place of a doctor's eyes, the arms and legs of care
staff and the support columns of a house.

In medical fields which deal directly with
human life, the requirement for precision equipment is an absolute.
For the control mechanisms of medical instruments such as CT
scanners or X rays, which examine the inside of the human body
and brain, the "LM Guide" is employed to help doctors
take accurate readings.
The LM Guide, which is capable of providing smooth and quiet
movement, is considered very effective, not only for its functionality,
but also for providing comfort to the patient. The potential
of THK's products in this field is continuously increasing;
for example, they are used in surgical operations supporting
robots which aid surgeons, and in nursing products which support
an aging society. Our technological advances are not only for
the further development of new technologies, but for the benefit
of people who use them and those on whom they are used. This
is THK's way of thinking.

Furthermore, THK's "Actuator"
has begun to be utilized in DNA analyzers in the most advanced
medical fields. The DNA field is expected to play a pivotal
role in the future medical field by offering the most suitable
treatment for each individual and analyzing genes to cure intractable
diseases. For developing the indispensable DNA chip for such
gene analysis, the high-speed drive linear motor became an extremely
effective technology, and it will help to facilitate further
development in this field.

THK's technologies are also applied to
the security of our daily life. Recently, we have seen more
"Platform Doors" installed in stations with new transportation
systems and metropolitan railway systems. It is not an exaggeration
to say the reduction of labor in transport facilities which
use one-man operation systems or automatic drive vehicles succeeded
because of the application of "Platform Doors" which
assure the safety of passengers. The smooth movement and thin
but durable slide structure of the door owe much to the contribution
of the LM Guide.
Unexpected accidents are not the only causes that threaten our
daily life. Natural disasters such as earthquake can instantly
take our lives and property away.
Conventional earthquake-resistant structures were the norm,
but the current method uses a base isolation structure which
transmits the quake energy to units as small as possible instead
of resisting it. THK has developed "LM Guide for base isolation"
which can be applied to both single-family houses and high buildings.
Japan is known as earthquake prone but we want people to feel
safe and secure. This is why THK continues to develop and expand
the possibilities of the base isolation structure for the future.
