The preload is an internal stress applied in advance so that a negative clearance is produced by using balls slightly larger than the clearance between each of the balls of the Ball Screw, composed of the nut and screw shaft. The application of a preload will eliminate backlash and decrease the axial elastic displacement for an external load (the enhancement in rigidity).
